The marriage of health and fitness

“What is essential is invisble to the eyes.”

“What is essential is invisble to the eyes.”

We owe a ginormous debt of gratitude to Tiffany Field, the godmother of modern massage research. Much of the scientific evidence for the health and analgesic benefits attributable to massage come from her research. During her storied career, she conducted more than a hundred studies and published four-hundred research papers demonstrating the efficacy of massage to improve health and reduce pain. She founded the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine; the first facility in the world devoted solely to the scientific study of touch. After forty years of researching the health benefits of massage, she observed:

“Studies show that self-massage has all the positive effects of regular massage, especially when people do it daily to get a greater dose of touch.”

It’s hard to talk about SMFH&F without at least mentioning Rich Poley. As an inveterate cheapskate, Rich learned self-massage while training for his first Ironman Triathlon in 2001. The daily dose of massage got him through the grueling event and revealed a mysterious power in his fingers. He was so intrigued by the discovery and fitness benefits self-massage brought he wrote Self-Massage for Athletes. The book illustrated the 7-simple-stroke-technique used here. Via the book, workshops, and YouTube videos, Rich has helped thousands of people throughout the world learn to use their hands to feel better fast.
